As an extension of the philosophy and practice of Recycle-A-Bicycle, The Cycle Craft Art (formerly Third Hand Art) Recycled Arts Program provides a comprehensive creative, environmental, cultural, and historical arts education to young artists of New York City. Working primarily with salvaged bicycles (and their many parts), participants create objects which are not only beautiful, but are also used to cultivate an increasingly important dialogue about cycling and recycling.
Students learn various crafts, including but not limited to drawing, printmaking, metal sculpture, and jewelry making. They also learn the social and cultural history behind these art forms, on local, national and global levels. Participants are exposed to the personal stories and practical realities of working artists in New York City through a series of studio visits with artists at various stages of their careers and working in a variety of media.
Participants will also have the opportunity to exhibit their work at local galleries and public venues, and possibly even at renowned museums, such as the Bronx Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Children's Museum. The exhibition experience is an important component to this project, as it necessarily addresses the relationship of one's vision to one's community, entrepreneurship, curatorial considerations, and celebration.
